Furnished short-term rentals
What to check: the minimum stay, what “furnished” includes, whether utilities and Wi-Fi are included, parking, the pet policy, how flexible the lease is, and the distance to the office and schools.
Where to look: corporate-housing operators, extended-stay hotels and monthly-stay rental platforms.
Should you rent or buy when relocating?
Renting first makes sense if your assignment is short (under about three years), you don’t know the area yet, or your employer covers temporary housing. Buying makes more sense for longer stays: buying and selling both have one-time costs that take a few years of ownership to recover.
A simple comparison: monthly rent versus mortgage interest + property tax + insurance + maintenance (about 1% of the price a year), minus the principal you pay down.
Property tax alone varies a lot by town: on a $400,000 home, about $4,240 a year in Brookfield (1.06%) versus about $8,320 in the City of Milwaukee (2.08%).
